I saw these interesting little fruits for sale at a market in Luang Prabang. They looked like grapes and when I asked what they were I was told, "Som, VERY som. Called Mak Kha Pom" (Sour, Very Sour) I had to try it! Lao people REALLY like getting falang to try some foods we are not used to. I LOVE to try those foods.
Hrm, they smell ok and the outside is kinda like a grape in texture but pretty hard. I can see how wide there eyes are as put it near my mouth. Maybe I'll go easy at first and just try a bite..
WOW! That's definitely some sour stuff. I ate the rest to everyone's surprise and many laughs were had. I love food. I love how it can make or break some social scenarios and endear you to your gracious hosts.
Anyone have some wonderful stories about how food has helped you win over some new friends in foreign lands? (Guess it could happen even at home) Let me know in the comments below.
